OutWrite Newsmagazine invites college students everywhere to submit articles to be published on our online platform!
Our mission statement: OutWrite is a multimedia platform that aims to empower the voices of the queer community by writing about what we think, how we feel, and the issues that matter to us. We bring these subjects into focus with the intention of educating allies and bridging gaps in communication within our own community. We do not hope to be the singular voice of the queer community, but to provide a space for dialogue. OutWrite will act as a resource for queer college students, a source of news, campus happenings and popular culture. It will function as an outlet for the creative endeavors of our staff and community. We aim to articulate these experiences and issues with an awareness and respect for our diverse identities.
We are a UCLA newsmagazine but are accepting guest articles from students everywhere. We recognize that the UCLA queer experience, though far from unanimous, represents only one slice of our larger community. We are interested in publishing voices from across Los Angeles, from colleges across the nation, from community colleges and from graduate programs, from college graduates and from college dropouts, and from beyond the U.S. border. We respect everyone’s experience and can credit you anonymously or under a pseudonym if you wish.
We publish content in the categories of community news, politics, opinion, arts and entertainment, and creative writing. We also welcome multimedia content such as illustration, photography, videography, and other creative work. If you’re not sure where a submission would belong, feel free to ask via email!
How to submit to OutWrite:
- Write your article! OutWrite will treat your submission as a first draft and send it to our editors, so it doesn’t need to be perfect, but it does need to be complete and aligned with our mission statement. Our preferred platform is Google Drive, but you can use MS Word as well.
- Email [email protected] with “Article Submission” in the subject line. Tell us your school and how you heard about us. Include a first draft of your submission as a Google Drive link or a Word attachment.
- We’ll email back to tell you whether your article’s been accepted. If it is, we’ll assign a copy editor and content editor to work on your piece. Prepare to go through both rounds of edits — how soon your article gets published depends on how quickly you respond to those.
Have questions? Confused about some part of the process? Not sure whether your article idea belongs on our site? Email [email protected] and we’ll get back to you!
