Illustrated by Noel Guzman (They/Them)
a towering indulgence
casts its shadow overhead,
outlining the infinite evening as
the chill claims its victims
drenching their thoughts in lecherous desire
but there are no glimmering pinpricks here
where my bloated ruminations call home,
only the dust and grime of
the love-worn shoes i used
to climb the dunes you built for me
from the sand i’ve since
erected my castles
to house the woes and wonders
i lost to the great construction
soon the breeze will comb through
it all to offer sacrifices to
the forgiving night shore
— she gives and takes
but mostly just
weathers —
(i am not the only one scavenging)
i wonder if she remembers when i
pushed you over the edge
and you returned as foam
to leave me where
i’d buried myself,
lying in wait
for a sunspot to roll between my fingers
